RE:         PFFM Information Officer John Brown

DATE:     January 10, 2012

Dear Brothers & Sisters:

Today I received notification from PFFM Information Officer John Brown, of his resignation from the PFFM Executive Board.

Brother Brown was first appointed to the Wilmington Fire Department in 1968, and quickly became an active member in his Local. John honorably served Local 1320 as their President for over 20 years.  In 1983, he was elected to represent the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, on the Massachusetts Fire Training Council. John held that office for over 12 years, serving 2 terms as Vice Chairman.  In 1999, John was elected as the PFFM Historian where he served until 2001. On June of that year, the Delegates of the 34th Biennial State Convention, voted to change the title from “Historian” to “Information Officer”.  Since then, John has served as our Information Officer working tirelessly to improve the lines of communication from our Leadership, through our affiliated Locals down to each of our more than 12,000 members. John’s forward thinking led to advances in our technology such as electronic media and social networking in an effort to engage the next generation of fire fighters.

John has dedicated his life to serving his members and the public.  As chairman of the PFFM Muscular Dystrophy Committee he has helped to improve the quality of lives for countless children suffering muscle disease.  He has helped our members across the Commonwealth as the Coordinator  of the PFFM Member Assistance Program (MAP) and is a Peer Counselor for the State & Metro-Boston Critical Incident Stress Teams (CISM).

Brother Brown has indicated that his decision to resign from the PFFM Executive Board was not an easy one.  He has currently been serving both as the PFFM Information Officer and as the Wilmington Fire Department interim Deputy Fire Chief.  John explained that this new job has limited his ability to fully commit to both positions, and he felt it was unfair to the PFFM, and our members.  Stepping down will also allow him to focus his full attention on his new job.  In this new capacity he will be able to influence change to improve public safety for his community.   He has the opportunity to help ensure that our Wilmington brothers and sisters receive the management support they need, so they may receive the very best in training and fire safety equipment.

On behalf of the entire Executive Board I wish Brother Brown and his wife Mia the very best in the future.

Fraternally,

Edward A. Kelly

President

Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts
